Anxiety Q&A

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is an uneasy feeling that may develop from time to time. An anxiety disorder, however, negatively affects your thoughts, moods, behaviors, and lifestyle and causes worry or fear in seemingly typical everyday situations. You might avoid social situations, traveling, or even leaving your home because of an anxiety disorder.

If anxiety negatively impacts your job, relationships, or quality of life, our mental health team at the California Center for Psychedelic Therapy can help.

What are the hallmark anxiety disorder symptoms?

Anxiety disorders can lead to:

  • Extreme worry or fear
  • Sweating
  • Uneasiness when around other people
  • Panic attacks
  • Trembling
  • Pounding heartbeat
  • Phobias (things that cause extreme fear)
  • Being scared of bad things happening
  • Depression

If you have a panic attack as a result of anxiety, you may experience shortness of breath, chest pain, or a feeling similar to a heart attack.

Anxiety can make you feel anxious in social situations, while flying, or in elevators or high altitudes.

What increases the risk of an anxiety disorder?

The following conditions may increase the risk of experiencing anxiety or developing an anxiety disorder:

  • Stress
  • Family history of anxiety
  • Medical conditions
  • Certain personality traits
  • Trauma
  • Childhood neglect
  • Depression
  • Alcohol or drug misuse

If you have a family member who struggles with anxiety or another mental health condition, your risk of an anxiety disorder is greater.

How is anxiety diagnosed?

The California Center for Psychedelic Therapy experts diagnose anxiety after discussing your mental health history, emotions, moods, behaviors, and thoughts. Your treatment team will ask about your current medications and review your treatment preferences before customizing a plan that’s best for you.
