What is bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder characterized by extreme mood swings. You might feel extremely energized one minute (mania) and significantly depressed the next. These mood swings can cause challenges with making good decisions, getting along with others, or succeeding at work or in school.

What are the different types of bipolar disorder?

The three main types of bipolar disorder are the following:

Bipolar I disorder

Bipolar I disorder includes at least one manic experience paired with hypomanic or major depressive episodes.

Bipolar II disorder

Bipolar II disorder includes at least one hypomanic episode and a minimum of one major depressive episode (but no manic experiences). 

Cyclothymic disorder

Cyclothymic disorder is a form of bipolar disorder characterized by at least two years of depressive and hypomanic symptoms.

What are the symptoms of bipolar disorder?

The symptoms of bipolar disorder include:

  • Excitability cycled with depression
  • Thoughts of suicide 
  • Sleeping less or more than usual
  • Racing thoughts
  • Being wired, energized, or jumpy cycled with fatigue
  • Extreme mood swings
  • Restlessness
  • Irritability 
  • Loss of interest in once-favorite activities
  • Agitation or irritability
  • Impulsive decisions

How is bipolar disorder diagnosed?

Diagnosing bipolar disorder includes a review of your medical history, emotions, moods, behaviors, and thought patterns. Your provider will inquire about any medications you take, your lifestyle, and your treatment preferences. 

How is bipolar disorder treated?
